Police appeal following serious M6 collision

A flat-bed goods vehicle collided with a HGV just after 3.30pm on Thursday on a stretch of the M6 southbound carriageway just before the M5 junction.

The 26-year-old driver of the smaller vehicle was taken to hospital with life-changing leg injuries where he remains in a serious condition.

The driver of the HGV stopped at the scene and is helping police with their enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:

“This collision occurred in heavy traffic and involved at least three vehicles. It’s one of the busiest stretches of motorway in the region and I’m hopeful that someone will have captured the collision on dash-cam video or witnessed what happened or the build-up to the collision.

“Apologies to anyone caught up in the tailback but the ambulance crew were treating a seriously injured man and our officers needed time to examine the scene.”

The M6 was closed for four hours following the crash.
