Top cop makes arrest on last shift with West Mids Police

One of West Mids Police’s most senior officers has made an arrest on his final day with the force – 22 years after ‘nicking’ a crook on his first day in the old bill.

ACC Alex Murray joined the Birmingham Organised Crime team yesterday (5 June) on proactive patrols on the lookout for people linked to gang activity and drug dealing.

Members of the specialist unit stopped a Ford Focus in Selston Road, Aston, and when Alex – set to take up a Met Police Commander role on Monday – searched the driver’s bag he found a quantity of cannabis and heroin.

He arrested a 31-year-old local man who was later charged with possessing Class A and B drugs, plus driving without insurance or a licence, and is due to appear in court later this month.

ACC Murray said:

“I’d already handed my uniform back so had to borrow one in order to get out on patrol. I wanted to end my career with West Midlands Police out on the streets and by coincidence I was with my friend PC David Tipton who I joined the force with back in 1996. To be fair it probably should have been his prisoner!

“I can remember arresting a man on my first day with West Midlands Police after I spotted him assaulting a member of the public in an alleyway.

“Back then new recruits spent two days observing police colleagues as part of their training – at that stage I didn’t know the exact form of words used when making an arrest so ended up saying something like “you’re nicked sunshine” as I knew that’s what people said on the TV!

“It’s been a real honour to serve the people of the West Midlands for more than two decades and I’m now looking forward to a new challenge in policing.”

Mr Murray starts his new role in London on Monday where his remit will be Specialist Crime, including murder and Operation Trident.
