Fly tipper’s car crushed for illegally dumping waste in Wolvo

City of Wolverhampton Council has crushed its first car to continue to clamp down on fly tippers across the city.

The red Volkswagen, seized at Chetwynd Road in January, has been crushed for fly tipping, after the registered keeper failed to come forward to claim the vehicle.

The untaxed and uninsured vehicle has been captured on CCTV on multiple occasions, illegally dumping rubbish at Drayton Street – one of Wolverhampton’s fly tipping hotspots.

The City Council contacted the registered keeper on several occasions to come forward for interviews under caution regarding the fly tipping and to claim the vehicle.

After receiving no correspondence from the registered keeper, the City Council decided to take action and crush the vehicle for scrap metal.

Councillor Steve Evans, Cabinet Member for City Environment at City of Wolverhampton Council said:

“Fly tipping is a serious crime that will not be tolerated.

“The vehicle has been captured on CCTV with the driver dumping waste on over 10 occasions – there is no excuse for this behaviour and it is simply not acceptable.

“This particular vehicle was also not taxed or insured – which poses a real danger to the public and puts people’s lives at risk.

“This the first time we have used our powers to crush a vehicle used for fly tipping and if these selfish acts continue – it won’t be the last.

“We hope this sends a strong message to all those involved in illegal acts of fly tipping – we mean what we say, if you don’t pay the fine – we will seize your vehicle and it if you don’t come forward to claim it, it will be crushed.”

The City Council also seized an additional 2 vehicles on Thursday (7 March), including a white LDV van and a silver Hyundai – bringing the total number to 6 vehicles seized for fly tipping in Wolverhampton, so far in 2019.
